The harsh\nconditions during this time of year can affect our skin in a way that causes a cascade of issues. Dry, Chapped Lips<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0257348 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0257348\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There\u2019s nothing worse than going to apply a beautiful lipstick or tinted gloss, only to realize it\u2019s\naccentuating chapped, cracked lips. Not only this, but dry lips can be pretty painful! Our lips are\ndifferent from the rest of our skin because they don\u2019t produce oil. Combine this with the fact that\nthey experience a lot of wear and tear (talking, eating, kissing, drinking, etc.) and it can be a real\nchallenge to keep them hydrated.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0edef10 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0edef10\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Solution<\/strong><br \/>Here are a few of my expert tips that will have you on your way to smoother lips in no time:<\/p><ul><li>\u00a0Look for a lip balm with occlusive ingredients.\u00a0This includes ingredients like shea butter or\ndimethicone. These will create a protective seal over the lips to keep moisture in.<\/li><li>Try a gentle sugar scrub or gentle washcloth.\u00a0This will remove dead, flaky skin that\u2019s built up\nso your chapstick can be more effective. You can also use a soft, damp washcloth and gently\nwipe over the lips to remove superficial dryness.<\/li><li>Protect your lips with SPF.\u00a0So important! A lot of people overlook this, but sun exposure can\ncause irritation and dryness. It\u2019s best to wear a lip product with an SPF of at least 20 every\nday.<\/li><li>Try sleeping with a humidifier in your bedroom.\u00a0This can help address the root cause of dry\nwinter lips and \u201crecharge\u201d your moisture levels so you\u2019re ready for the day ahead!<\/li><li>Do not pull off dry skin.\u00a0It\u2019s tempting when the skin is dry to want to pull it off but as you\nhave may experienced before, this can make the lips bleed if you remove skin that is still\nattached to live skin cells. Ouch!<\/li><\/ul><p>Keep in mind, it\u2019s not just about how you treat chapped lips. It\u2019s also about what you do to prevent\nthem in the first place.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf3c6d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cf3c6d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2. Cracked Heels<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5815504 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5815504\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Cracked heels seem to get worse and worse as winter drags on, and this can be a real annoyance\ncome spring once it\u2019s time to wear sandals again. The feet don\u2019t naturally retain much moisture, so\nonce the air gets cold and dry, cracked heels are almost inevitable. Staying on top of them and\npreventing cracking in the first place is so much easier than trying to correct dry, damaged heels all\nat once.<\/p><p><strong>Solution<br \/><\/strong>So, what can you do? Every night, I personally slather a thick ointment or salve on my feet. Then, I\nput on a pair of cotton socks to wear overnight. This prevents moisture from escaping and really\nhelps force the ointment to soak into my feet. I also suggest wearing socks during the day as much\n\nas possible since this will prevent moisture loss to some degree. Bonus: Put a foot cream on during\nthe day, too.<strong><em> Muista kosteuttaa jalat my\u00f6s p\u00e4ivisin.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-51ed9fe elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"51ed9fe\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-44ad135\" data-id=\"44ad135\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3504df3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3504df3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3. Dry, Flaky Skin on the Face<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-11a28ee elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"11a28ee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This has to be one of the most common skincare complaints I hear from clients and customers\nduring winter. It\u2019s not always easy to identify what\u2019s causing dry, flaky skin on someone\u2019s face, but\nthe fact is, a damaged moisture barrier almost always comes into play.\nIt can be really challenging to keep your skin\u2019s natural moisture barrier intact during this unforgiving\nseason. Cold temperatures and low humidity cause the dry air to pull water out of your skin (dry air\nis greedy and will steal moisture from anywhere it can). This damages your barrier and causes tiny,\ninvisible cracks in the skin. Moisture escapes through these cracks making it even harder for your\nskin to retain it. It\u2019s truly a vicious cycle!<\/p><p><strong>Solution<\/strong><br \/>The best solution is to<br \/><em><strong>to\u00a01)\u00a0topically apply products that keep moisture in the skin and\u00a02)\u00a0exfoliate\nregularly.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>Exfoliating will lift off surface dryness so that your hydrating products can get straight to work\ninstead of sitting on top of a layer of dead skin. Dry, Peeling Nose<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3a705bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3a705bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Sometimes I find that even when people get the dry, flaky skin on their face under control, they can\u2019t\nseem to stop their nose from peeling. This usually happens on the top, sides, or corners of the nose.<br \/><strong>There can be a number of reasons for this:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>\u00a0Environmental exposure.\u00a0Winter air is often exceptionally cold and dry, and our nose is the\nmain point of entry for this air. This can dry out the mucus membrane of the nose, making it\nhard for the surrounding skin to retain moisture.<\/li><li>UV damage.\u00a0Since our noses protrude, they\u2019re especially prone to UV exposure. Over time,\nthis can thicken the skin and dry it out, causing peeling or flaking. Keep in mind that if this\npeeling persists over time (especially after you\u2019ve been treating it), it could be an early sign\nof skin cancer. In this case, it\u2019s always best to get checked out by a dermatologist just to be\nsafe.<\/li><li>Allergies or sickness.\u00a0Ah yes, cold and flu season. There\u2019s nothing more miserable than a\nstuffy, runny nose, and constant blowing can essentially cause your nose to become\nchapped.<\/li><li>A skin condition.\u00a0If you deal with any skin conditions like eczema or rosacea that can cause\nflakiness, winter climates may exacerbate this.<\/li><li>Your skincare products.\u00a0Finally, your skincare routine could be causing dryness and peeling\non your nose. Two common mistakes I see are overdoing it with exfoliation and using\nproducts that are too drying for this time of year (especially acne-focused products). The\nreality is, as the seasons\u2019 change,\u00a0so should your skincare routine.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"translation-block\">You may have to use a thicker ointment or\u00a0cream\u00a0on your nose than on the rest of your face to\ncreate a healing barrier. It\u2019s easy to neglect the\nskin on the rest of your body, but you\u2019ll want to step it up once the temperatures go down. The main\nproblems you want to avoid are itchy and\/or bumpy skin. Itchy, flaky skin is uncomfortable and no\nfun, but beyond that, excessive scratching may damage your skin. When the skin gets dry, it can also\nget bumpy (especially on the arms and legs). I prefer to stay on top of this so that, come spring, my\nskin is ready for warmer-weather clothes again!<\/p><p><strong>Solution<\/strong><br \/>For starters, you\u2019ll want to remove dry, dead skin cells a few times a week by gently scrubbing them\noff. This can be done in the shower using a loofah or exfoliating cloth, or you can prep for your\nshower using a dry brush.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">In addition, you will of course want to keep the skin on your body well-hydrated by regularly\napplying body lotion. Cut back for a bit until things are under control.<\/li><li>Use a gentle cleanser.\u00a0I prefer a cleansing lotion if your skin is dry and a hydrating gel if your\nskin is oily.<\/li><li>Start using a toner.<\/li><li>Use a moisturizer with barrier-repairing ingredients<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-06e56bf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"06e56bf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">8. While this can definitely be the case for some, winter presents its own set of challenges for\nbreakout-prone skin.<\/p><p>As you can tell by now, surface dehydration is a pretty big theme when it comes to winter skin\nissues! You may think that if your skin is oily, you\u2019re exempt from this issue\u2014but think again. When\noily skin types get dehydrated (dehydration is a lack of\u00a0water\u00a0in the skin, not a lack of oil), their skin\nstarts to produce even more oil. This is a natural defense mechanism and your skin\u2019s attempt to stay\nhealthy and hydrated. Unfortunately, more oil can lead to more breakouts.\nIn addition, having dehydrated cells on the surface of your skin creates an unwanted type of barrier\nthat traps things (think oil, dirt, and bacteria) underneath. Because of this, dehydration can actually\nbe a big cause of clogged pores for a lot of people. Eventually, these clogged pores can turn into red,\ninflamed blemishes.
